That is exactly what Land Rover as done to celebrate the 70th Anniversary of the classic Defender by making a Special Edition for sale. This 150 unit limited run is the highest performance stock Defender ever, cramming a naturally aspirated 5.0-litre V8 into the engine bay, supplying 400bhp and 380lb ft of torque. Power to the ground will be delivered by an automatic transmission – a rarity among Defenders.
These Defenders are not actually new production models but are in fact restorations from a donor Defender that are upgraded and refinished to the anniversary spec.
The extremely low volume run of this last hurrah model has a price-tag to match, starting at £150,000 or $257,000 Canadian for a Defender 90, and goes north from there. Alas, because it is being listed as a 2018 model year, these special edition Defenders won’t be able to be imported into Canada for another 15 years.
